Before you invest in a coffee maker or coffee machine, you need to think about what sort of coffee you like. There are many types of coffees in the market today and you can choose from cappuccino, filter or espresso.  You also need to consider how much coffee you want and how often you would like to use your machine. One of the most popular types is ground coffee. However, not all coffee makers available are suitable ground coffee machines so you’ll need to ensure you’re not buying a pod only version.

Ground coffee is coffee which has been prepared for brewing by being ground or crushed.  When hot water passes through ground coffee, it extracts all the compounds from the coffee. In order to ensure the highest quality cup of coffee, it is important to match the brewing method to the grinding method. So what are ground coffee machines? They are basically the coffee machines that use ground coffee for brewing.

Different Machines for Ground Coffee

One type of popular coffee beverage made from ground coffee is espresso coffee. Ground espresso is the most widely drunk coffee in the world. The coffee can be ground manually or with the help of a pulse grind. Ground coffee cannot be stored for a long time because it will lose its aroma, taste, flavor and strength.

Percolators

Percolators use ground coffee and they are inserted just above the water chamber.  As the water boils, it is forced up a tube and then down through the coffee and back into the compartment below. There are stove top versions, as well as electric versions which come with heating elements.

Filter coffee machine

The filter coffee machine is a pretty basic machine. All you need to do is pour cold water in the top of the machine where it will be warmed before it drips down through a basket of coffee into a jug. Coffee is then kept warm by a hot plate. The good thing about filter coffee machines is that you can use any type of ground coffee.

Pump espresso makers

Pump espresso makers use a thermostatically controlled boiler which is responsible for heating the water to the optimum temperature for coffee. When the optimum temperature is reached, water passes through the ground coffee. Most pump espresso makers come with a tool which is used to steam milk. Steam milk is vital to cappuccinos and espressos.

Bean-to-cup

If you want to grind your own coffee bean, then you can get the bean-to-cup coffee machine. This machine will grind the coffee and then run it through hot water before dispensing it in your cup. It is just like a pump espresso maker with a built-in grinder.

Considerations when buying a machine

Making the best coffee is all about getting the grind right so if you are buying a machine which does not come with an integrated grinder, you need to spend more on a good grinder than any other piece of equipment for your coffee.  When you achieve a consistent and accurate grind, you will be able to extract the best liquid from your coffee.

When picking out machines you need to look at more than just the price tag. You want to purchase a ground coffee machine which gives you the most bang for your buck.
