Coffee is one of life’s pleasures. It is hard to imagine mornings and afternoons without a cup of the prefect brew. Life is better with coffee; it is one of the beverages which drive us. People all over the world spend millions of dollars a year on coffee, from the ubiquitous Starbucks to coffee brewed at home.

Beginning everyday with a cup of coffee is tradition not only in the UK but in other countries all over the world. Some people grab a cup from the coffee shop down the street while on their way to work and there are others who prefer to brew their own cup at home. If you belong to the latter, then you should know by now that it is of utmost importance to find the best ground coffee if you want to brew a great cup at home.

The coffee you choose determines the taste of your coffee, hence, it is vital to know how to choose them.

Know the varieties

There are different varieties of coffee but they all come from two coffee plants, Robusta and Arabica. Robusta has twice the amount of caffeine than Arabica and it has a bolder taste. It is also more acidic and has a more pronounced bitter flavor. Robusta is not recommended for coffee drinkers with weak stomach because it might give them a tummy ache. More than three quarters of coffee sales all over the world are from the Arabica variety.

It’s all in the bean

In order to determine the quality of the bean, it is advised to take a waft of the bean or the grounds and breathe in the flavor. Coffee beans have oils and chemical compounds which give it aroma and flavor. When the coffee’s natural chemical composition is preserved, it will be able to maintain its freshness and quality. It is advisable to only grind the coffee bean as needed because it helps lock the flavors in. This is why you should never purchase ground coffee which has been on the shelf for a long time. They will not taste as good. If you do not have a grinder at home, it is best that you purchase freshly ground beans locally.

Grinding the coffee bean

There are two main types of coffee grinders in the market and they are the basic grinder and the burr grinder. The basic grinder has a flat blade at the bottom which pulverizes the coffee beans into a fluffy powder. On the other hand, the burr grinder is about ten times more expensive than the basic grinder.  It comes with two interlocking metal blades which grinds the bean evenly.

Do not refrigerate!

One of the things which people should keep in mind is to never, ever put coffee in the refrigerator. Putting coffee in the refrigerator and taking it out more than once or twice is a sure way for the coffee to lose its flavor. If you want to preserve or have the best ground coffee, the best thing to do is to put it in an airtight canister. Failure to properly store the beans will result in less flavor and little to no aroma.

My favourite

For me, Lavazza is probably my favourite brand[/easyazon_link] for ground coffee. I have been using the Lavazza Tierra for a while and the coffee is just smooth as silk. It is not too strong but it has a rich flavor and a good aroma which is what I like.  The coffee is made from Arabica beans so it doesn’t have much bitterness. Also, it supports the small Rain-forest communities by using their beans. To me, this is a premium ground coffee.
